People in wheelchairs will now be able to join their counterparts on stage at Positively Wellington Venues after the purchase of a new wheelchair lift.
With graduation season just around the corner, the new portable lift ¨C the first of its kind to be used in a Wellington venue ¨C provides safe and dignified access to the stage at PWV¡¯s venues. Graduates in wheelchairs will now be able to join their peers on-stage to receive their degree or diploma, while the lift will also be used for stage dinners and to assist wheelchair or scooter-bound performers or crew working on stage.
Purchased with a Performing Arts Foundation (PAF) grant, the lift is unobtrustive, designed to blend in with its surroundings and quiet to operate. The length of the platform also means that it can be used by people using mobility scooters.
¡°This is a wonderful new piece of equipment for PWV, which gives equal access for all to our stages, which is perfectly timed with graduation season,¡± says PWV CEO Glenys Coughlan.
¡°The hinged dock plate enables a smooth transition between lift platform and stage, while the walls of the lift are made from a high impact transparent thermoplastic which gives users a clear view of their surroundings.¡±
Because the lift is highly portable, it can be used across multiple venues. Easily adjustable to fit different stage heights, the lift is completely self-contained, on wheels, and requires no assembly, so is easy to transport and install. PWV will lend out the lift to venue and hospitality partners as required when the company is not using it.
Says Ms Coughlan: ¡°We¡¯re delighted to offer a Wellington-first to our new round of graduates, prize winners, performers and crew. This lift opens up the stage to allow access to everyone.¡±
Performing Arts Foundation Chair Roger Miller says the Foundation is pleased to have allocated funds to ensure the freedom of access to all PWV stages.¡°This [the wheelchair lift] enables that vital satisfaction of being on stage to be a proud moment enjoyed by one and all.¡±
