New packages for exploring Indonesia tailored for Hong Kong and Macau
New discovery holidays have been launched to Indonesia¡¯s cultural heartland of Jogyakarta and the fabled island of Lombok by Garuda Orient Holidays (GOH) Hong Kong.
They are among innovative packages tailored for the Hong Kong and Macau market by the new package tour arm of Indonesia¡¯s national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia ¨C complimenting the recent introduction of daily direct flights between Hong Kong and Bali, and twice-daily flights to Jakarta.
Four day-three night packages to Jogyakarta start from HK$5,190 valid for travel until 20 December 2012, highlighted by a day-long tour to Indonesia¡¯s most important archaeological sites including Borobudur and Prambanan temples, the latter a UNESCO World Heritage Site being the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and one of the largest in Southeast Asia.
Built from two million stone blocks, Borobudur forms a massive symmetrical stupa literally wrapped around a small hill, this colossal Buddhist relic remains as enigmatic and beautiful as it must have been when built 1200 years ago. The monument was conceived as a Buddhist vision of the cosmos in stone, starting in the everyday world and spiralling up to nirvana - the Buddhist heaven. A mountain range across the horizon south of the temple looks uncannily like a reclining Buddha.
The base for the holiday, Jogyakarta, is Indonesia¡¯s cultural soul, central to the nation¡¯s artistic and intellectual heritage. Fiercely independent and protective of its customs, Jogyakarta is now the site of a truce between the old ways of life and the trappings of modernity that have swept across Indonesia in recent decades. Still headed by its sultan, whose kraton remains the hub of traditional life, contemporary Jogyakarta is as much a bustling city as an encapsulation of batik, gamelan and ritual. But while the process of modernisation homogenises many of Java¡¯s cities, Jogyakarta continues to juggle past and present with relative ease, sustaining a slower, more conservative way of life.
Jogyakarta¡¯s potency has long outweighed its size, and it is Java¡¯s premier tourist city, with countless hotels, restaurants and attractions of its own. It is also an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions, including Kota Gede, the famed hub of Jogyakarta¡¯s silver industry since the 1930s. Taman Sari was once a splendid pleasure park of palaces, pools and waterways for the sultan, and in the south of the city Tembi is a Javanese cultural centre surrounded by rice paddies.
Four day-three night packages to the relatively undiscovered island of Lombok start from HK$4,290 valid for travel until 29 June 2012. Lombok is a magnet for both treckers and surfers in the fabled Gili Islands. Day-trip options from Matram, Lombok's capital, include nearby Senggigi¡¯s sweeping bays and scenic Sumbawa offering low key tourism. About 15 minutes south is the little settlement of Sukarara. Famous for its unique handicrafts, in particular its hand-woven textiles, it is incredibly beautiful and the small village portrays the quaint lifestyle of the islanders. Each area of Indonesia has a unique style of batik and, true to plan; this is an interesting place to visit to get an insight in the art of traditional weaving.
