The tragedy may have occurred 100 years ago but the sinking of RMS Titanic continues to touch the hearts of people around the world today.
1500 people perished when the ship that was deemed ¡®unsinkable¡¯, struck an iceberg in the Atlantic on 15 April 2012.
A memorial ceremony was held in Belfast where the Titanic was built and the first-ever monument to contain all of the victims¡¯ names now resides.
Unveiled in front of dignitaries, relatives of the victims and explorer Robert Ballard, who discovered the wreck of the Titanic, the monument honours all who perished alphabetically with no distinction of class or position.
A minute¡¯s silence was observed as the choir sang ¡°Nearer My God to Thee¡± which is believed to have played as the ship sank.
¡°We remember all those who perished and whose names are herein inscribed - men, women and children who loved and we loved, their loss still poignantly felt by their descendents,¡± Reverend Ian Gilpin said to the 300-strong gathering.
The city now also offers the attraction ¡®Titanic Belfast¡¯ which takes guests on a journey through the phases of building to the tragedy of that fateful night.
¡°We are all proud of this ship. What happened was a disaster; she was not,¡± Belfast Titanic Society chair Una Reilly told USA Today.
Thousands also gathered at a memorial concert in the city on Saturday featuring performances by Bryan Ferry and Joss Stone ahead of a torch-lit procession from St. Anne¡¯s Cathedral to the memorial garden at city hall.
Two Titanic themed cruises sailed out to the wreck site carrying passengers including descendents of those who perished and others who donned period costumes in honour of those who sailed a centenary ago.
Azamara Journey sailed from New York to meet the sold-out ms Balmoral that departed from Southampton. They bothsounded their whistles at the exact moment the Titanic struck an iceberg and then sat side by side in silence while wreaths were cast into the sea off the coast of Newfoundland.
All 1,500 victims¡¯ names were read out in memorial ceremonies aboard both ships earlier in the day.
Commemorative ceremonies were also held in Halifax, Nova Scotia where 100 victims lay buried and Las Vegas, San Diego, Houston and Singapore where ¡®Titanic: The Artefact Exhibition¡¯ is being hosted.
Cunard also took time out over the weekend to commemorate Carpathia and her Master, Captain Arthur Rostron, who rescued all Titanic survivors. The line offered a remembrance service and dinner on each of their ships.Did you do anything to commemorate the sinking of Titanic? Do you think that cruise lines should have done more in memoriam of the historic event?
