One of a kind Convention Centre unveiled

Thursday, 23 February 2012

The travel industry caught a first glimpse of what has been described as a “one of a kind” exhibition centre to open in Brisbane in 2013.

Unveiled yesterday at AIME, the completion of the Royal International Convention Centre at RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane is expected by December this year.

First features of the new complex revealed include a custom-built operable ceiling grid system that can cut exhibition set-up time by up to a day as well as a state-of-the-art rigging system that requires less labour and less set-up costs.

Catering facilities are also expected to be world-class, capable of serving up to 2,600 plates while ovens are designed to produce fresh food on a daily basis for large numbers.

With bookings now open and its first event to be held March next year, RNA chief executive Jonathan Tunny told the industry the $2.9 billion centre is expected to draw in 220 events per year and is set to “transform the site into a vibrant year-round destination”.

Located less than 15 minutes outside of Brisbane’s international and domestic airports, Mr Tunny explained the Royal International will draw in up to 30,000 visitors annually and would build on the region’s $212 million business events sector.

“Attracting business events to Brisbane Australia’s new world city has a positive effect on the bottom line of the local economy and creates lasting legacies for local businesses and individuals whom benefit from knowledge enrichment and skills transfer for years to come,” Brisbane Marketing Convention Bureau director Annabel Sullivan added.
