Real Gap launches one-of-a-kind medical internship in Namibia

Monday, 6 February 2012

THE newest medical miracle of its kind in Australian travel, Real Gap Experience is offering the inimitable experience of working in a rural medical clinic in eastern Namibia for between eight and 12 weeks.
If you’re looking for an impressive addition to the CV, Real Gap’s Namibia Medical Internship is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to get invaluable medical work experience under your belt.

This is a fantastic opportunity for participants considering a career in medicine who are yet to obtain any qualifications, but also equally life-changing for trained medical professionals and medicine students alike.

And to celebrate the launch, Real Gap Experience is offering travellers a saving of 10% for a limited time.
Participants will work alongside the resident doctor and nurse at a remote clinic set up to provide healthcare and support to the San Bushman community in eastern Namibia, many of whom live in extreme poverty.

While providing vital care and treatment to patients, participants will learn about the common diseases and ailments that are affecting the community on a regular basis and the most effective ways of treating them.

The clinic provides lessons which are tailored to the experience and background of each individual. For example, prospective medical students can expect to have lessons in basic clinical skills, taking of patient history and patient examinations – whereas qualified medical professionals will be asked to run consultations with patients and help with outreach work in the community.

In addition, participants will have the enviable opportunity to undertake a research project focused on an area of interest that will benefit the clinic and help to further improve the services provided; such as local patterns for disease, studies of clean water, TB rates and patient knowledge of diseases such as HIV/AIDS.

But it isn’t all work, no play!  A wonderful encounter caring for orphaned, abused or injured animals at the Namibian Wildlife Sanctuary near the country’s capital, Windhoek, also awaits participants upon arrival and departure from the program.

Now priced from only $6614 per person for eight weeks, the package includes all accommodation and meals, return airport transfers to and from the clinic, the internship placement, detailed orientation and 24 hour emergency support.

This internship is extremely rewarding for anyone looking to help make a difference in the lives of local people whilst improving and developing your own medical skills and knowledge.

Some medical experience or basic training is beneficial and your experience level will determine the extent of the work you can be involved in.  Participants will need to obtain a volunteer visa for Namibia.
