International celebrities, Andy Lau, Chiling Lin and newcomer Jingchu Zhang, along with Directors Jay Sun and Robert Francis Brown, plus Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and the Consulate General of The People¡¯s Republic of China announced the filming of ¡°Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains¡± in Dubai yesterday.
The contemporary action film¡¯s key scenes are being filmed at Atlantis, The Palm and other Dubai landmarks, including the Burj Arab and the Burj Khalifa with the support of the DTCM. According to relevant local sources, the shooting of ¡°Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains¡± is comparable to the production of ¡°Mission Impossible 4¡±, in terms of team size, equipment and creative use of space. It will be filmed across four countries and six cities: namely Dubai, Hangzhou, Fuyang, Taipei, Tokyo and Milan.
With a production cost of more than RMB100 million and the largest investment in China, the project is the first Chinese film to be predominantly produced outside China. The storyline is a modern legend combining duels of life vs death, between justice and evil with the complexity of the pains and sorrows of the heroes and heroines, as inspired by a rare Chinese painting from the Yuan Dynasty.
The cast features China¡¯s leading stars including Lau from Hong Kong, praised locally as a ¡°King¡± by his millions of Asian fans, Tong and Zhang from China as well as Lin from Taiwan will also heat up the screen, showcasing their broad acting talents through these career-defining roles.
¡°The agenda is really tight and we often need to act day after night,¡± says actors Lau, Lin and Zhang. ¡°Although the high-tech and exotic landscapes do help to give us an illusion of being on vacation.¡±
In 2008, when shooting promotional videos for the Beijing Olympic Games, Director Sun, made a sophisticated and detailed description of Beijing. Now his lens will go into the sky and sea, to capture a three-dimensional Dubai, unveiling the mystery of the city. Atlantis, The Palm, Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab and other great landmarks will present the global audience with a modern, aesthetic Dubai. ¡°Dubai is the only city that can provide a "real dream-like" setting for the movie, with the city¡¯s wealth and luxury representing the extreme states of modern elements,¡± says Sun.
¡°I hope this production will refresh visual senses of Chinese movies¡A movie is a space for dreams, and it should allow people to go beyond the experience of their daily life,¡± added Sun. ¡°China¡¯s ancient costume movies, though popular internationally, have difficulty in breaking through visually." He hopes ¡°Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains¡± will set a standard for major productions of modern China, and that the movie will be a landmark visual production for modern Chinese movies.
Although ¡°Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains¡± is being created by an elite Hollywood team, it will not portray Dubai from a Hollywood adventure perspective. "In my movie, Dubai is as beautiful as heaven and as precious as a pearl. We will not describe this country with the sand, camels and dust as in ¡®Mission Impossible 4¡¯,¡± commented Sun. ¡°The promotion of the movie will continue for 6 months, during which, the wonderful pictures of Dubai will continue to be strengthened and spread around the world, making residents proud of their city."
At present, the Chinese movie market is booming, and 2011 box office figures reached RMB13 billion. With the influence of these stars, this joint cooperation between China Film Group, Phoenix, Pegasus & Taihe and other organisations, the film will have a large-scale distribution in Southeast Asia. European and American distributors are also actively promoting the simultaneous release of the movie in Europe and the Americas.
Sun hopes to present the movie as a gift to Dubai. "Shooting here is a very special memory for me. This is where I feel the rapid changes in world civilisation. I seem to enter into a tunnel of time and space to view the wonders of the earth,¡± he says, ¡°I hope the movie will be screened in Dubai and that Dubai will consider this work as a valuable name card for the city.¡±
Mr. Saleh Al Geziry, Director of Overseas Promotions and Inward Missions at DTCM, welcomes the cast and crew and hopes the film will bring more Chinese people closer to Dubai, already a favourite destination for tourists from the People¡¯s Republic. ¡°In order to tap the immense growth potential, the DTCM has opened three representative offices in China and has remained an active player in the tourism industry there since the signing of the Approved Destination Status (ADS) agreement between the UAE and China years ago,¡± he said. ¡°I am sure that this film will help bring Dubai close to Chinese people and we look forward to showing them the old world charm of Arabia as well as the modernity.¡±
¡°Atlantis, The Palm is honoured to be commencing the ¡®Year of the Dragon¡¯ with a starring role in ¡®Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains¡¯ which I am sure will be an international blockbuster,¡± added Serge Zaalof, Chief Operating Officer at Atlantis, The Palm. ¡°The Chinese market is especially important to us at Atlantis and it is a pleasure to have the cast and crew filming their key scenes and choosing to stay with us during filming in Dubai.¡±
